600 degrees : 100 years of shade
a visual concerto presented at Scoribreac homestead
Clunes 2016

100 Years - the approximate life span of a Cyprus or Monterey pine, the familiar trees that mark the farming landscape of Australia.
600 degrees - the ignition temperature of wood.
The trees in our bonfire were planted in 1914 by the Grandmother of the current landowner, Christine Rowe

The use of live fire was genius. Not only did it draw attention to the mutability of nature – and nature manipulated for human purposes – it also delivered, as embers rose by the thousand into the darkening sky – an extraordinary theatricality. 600 Degrees was deeply memorable, both as a performance to witness, and an event to experience.

PROGRAM NOTES

A visual concerto with sculpture, voice, cello, the pitch of Fire and drone of bagpipes plus the power, exhilaration and beauty of a bonfire.  We are once again delving into the history and memories of the people in our region and our town. We look at the fragility and impermanence of ephemeral art, music and Fire in an evolving temporal landscape tenaciously striving for renewal.
Kristin Rule uses a technique called live looping which involves the creation of layered sounds, live in performance using no pre-recorded audio whatsoever.  Flammable artworks were designed and crafted by Eliza-Jane Gilchrist with steel work by Bob McKinnon. Together they created a surreal installation, a flaming garden that ultimately ignited the wood stack.  Rebecca has worked with locals and scientists to discuss life, land, fire, trees, family and harsh realities in all their complexity and diversity.  Using a technique called headphone verbatim, David Adamson wears headphones and speaks the words of these people as he hears them, the story teller using the words of the people.  Our Lighting Design was created by the ever adaptive Philip Lethlean.  It has been a truly collaborative process and without the genius of the artists and locals involved it would not have happened.
